Steps
- 1. CATCHY FIRST SENTENCE
- 2. SUMMARISE THE PLOT
- 3. WRITE WITH YOUR UNIQUE VOICE
- CATCHY FIRST SENTENCE TO CAPTURE READER’S ATTENTION
You want the reader to read your whole review so hook them in at the start. What made you choose this book to read? What is the most unique, amazing, fascinating, aspect of the book and what made you keep reading it?
- BRIEFLY SUMMARISE THE PLOT OR CONTENT BUT WITHOUT SPOILERS!
Provide some more than what is on the back cover but not enough to squash the intrigue. It may be tempting to share what gave you an intense reaction but don’t rob the reader, if that information potentially gives away too much and becomes a unwanted spoiler.
3. WRITE WITH YOUR UNIQUE VOICE AND SHARE YOUR PASSION WITH OTHER READERS
Aspects you may add to your review include;
- What was the overall tone of the book?
- How did you feel while reading?
- Flow, pace and readability.
- What was your favourite part of the book?
- If there are photos or illustrations, do they match the objective of the book?
- What type of reader would enjoy the book?
- Describe the author’s writing style and how the writer uses language.
- Are there possible content trigger warnings you might mention?
- Could you relate to any aspects in the book?
- What did you come away with after reading the book?
Be clear what your opinions are.
Reviews can be long or short, with many aspects covered or just a few. It is up to you.
